Another indexing opportunity

A new project that has been started by the Kawartha Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society is the indexing of the family histories in the society’s library.

They hope to create a name index for each history and will put the index in TONI (The Ontario Name Index - the three million and growing name index created by OGS).

If you would like to help, this is another project you can do in your own home. You will be sent a digitized copy of the family history, you read it, and you enter each name you find into a spreadsheet.

It sounds like a neat thing to do over the summer!

If you want to help, please contact them at kawarthaprojects@ogs.on.ca

The website for the TONI page is http://www.ogs.on.ca/projects.php#toni

UPDATE: TONI (The Ontario Name Index)

Since last reporting on TONI (The Ontario Name Index) earlier this spring, nearly 2 ½ million entries have been added.

TONI, as an index, is FREE for everyone the world over. In order to access information found in the databases you must pay a small fee. All proceeds from those fees support Ontario's heritage community.

Go to www.ogs.on.ca/integrated/toni_database1.php to read more about TONI, and to see if the name who are researching, is there.

Anyone can use TONI. It is open to members and non-members alike, and they would look forward to hearing from you.

So if you can help, that would be great!

The records are available through the website, and Pay-Per-View (PPV) at www.ogs.on.ca/integrated/toni_databasesearch.php

The Ontario Name Index (TONI) Needs Indexers

The Ontario Name Index (TONI) reached 1-million entries last fall. This is a remarkable milestone but there are many more items that could be added with a larger team of indexers preparing the materials.

A larger TONI indexing team can help us make more information available such as the following:

» Diaries and letters from the Cobourg area

» Information about visitors to a hotel in Kirkland Lake

» Road Petitions from Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties

» Archival information from the Ottawa Valley

» Obituaries from London- Middlesex

» Documents from Cornwall

» Newspapers from an old Toronto area village

and,  By-Laws and assessment rolls from villages in the Peterborough area

Everyone is welcome to be a TONI indexer and you can do it in the comfort of your own home. You will need your own computer, the software to read pdfs (downloaded for free), and you will need to be comfortable working with Excel.

If you’re interested in helping get this information online, contact the Provincial Office at provoffice@ogs.on.ca, and we’ll connect you with the project.

TONI Is Growing Everyday!

One of the best resources that a genealogist should check is the Ontario Genealogical Society’s TONI – The Ontario Name Index.

The Ontario Name Index (TONI) is a mega-index of names with the goal of including every name found in any publication relating to Ontario

Started in 2011 TONI is growing with new resources added every day!

There are already many names on the index. There is a low cost to download the information on the name(s) you have found, but the index itself is free to use!

To see how to use TONI, go to www.ogs.on.ca/integrated/toni_database1.php

Hint: I still use the Ontario Genealogical Provincial Index at www.ogs.on.ca/ogspi/welcome.htm to compare information with TONI to make sure that I have all the information that I need.

Happy 2012!

The past year of 2011 was great as far as Canadian Genealogy was concerned!

For the Ontario Genealogy Society (OGS) www.ogs.on.ca, it was their 50th Anniversary (which was celebrated in Hamilton), the OGS and the National Institute for Genealogical Studies www.genealogicalstudies.com started a partnership, and TONI (The Ontario Names Index) www.ogs.on.ca/home/TONI.php was started.

It was also the year of the 17th Conference of the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ontario (BIFHSGO) www.bifhsgo.ca, and the beginning of covering the Conference using Social Media tools (I was one of their Official Bloggers, which included John D. Reid of Anglo-Celtic Connections blog fame http://anglo-celtic-connections.blogspot.com, and Susan Davis, BIFHSGO's Director of Communications, and presenter of her excellent and informative lecture, “A Social Media Primer for Family Historians”).

My blog was very successful this year: I published 326 posts, and I made many new friends over the year through the blog. It was the first year that I tried a series of blog postings for Remembrance Week www.genealogycanada.blogspot.com/2011/11/blogger-showcases-canadas-veterans-week.html, and it was extremely well-received.

Another year has past as Editor of Families, the journal of the Ontario Genealogical Society, and I had a year of exceptional papers submitted and published. And it doesn't look like it will slow down ...

So I wish everyone a Very Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year, and may all of those Genealogy Wishes (and you know what they are) do come true for you!

Elizabeth

The Ontario Name Index (TONI)

As part of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the OGS, The Ontario Name Index (TONI) has been growing steadily ever since, having posted close to 250,000 single names in the index.

They hope to eventually have tens of millions of entries in the database.

TONI includes -
  • converting and importing the existing electronic indices at both the Branch and Society level, i.e. Ontario Cemetery Ancestor Index or the Ottawa Branch Name Index;

  • digitizing and importing existing hard copy indices;

  • indexing existing electronic and hard-copy documents and importing them, including family histories, Tweedsmuir histories, items in the e-library, etc. Branch publications such as cemeteries, census, newspapers, and other transcriptions that they have done; and
  • indices to digitized documents produced for other organizations as part of the scanning project could be included, with permission of the owner.
Presently, they are putting in names in cemetery transcriptions of Northumberland and Carleton Counties of Ontario. They have already put in cemeteries of Wellington, Peterborough, and Hastings Counties.

TONI is available to everyone. You do not need to be an OGS member to use the index.

Go to www.ogs.on.ca/integrated/toni_database1.php.

If any of the members of the OGS would like to help enter material into TONI, contact your Branch TONI Co-ordinator or the Provincial TONI Co-ordinator, Mike More, at Director08@ogs.on.ca.
