Alberta Family History Society

There will be a meeting of the Alberta Family History Society at the River Park Church, 3818 - 14A Street SW in Calgary Monday, May 6, 7-9 p.m. at which Frances Swendsen will speak about Family Tree, a new feature at the FamilySearch.org website.

If you would like to view the new website before going to the meeting, you can watch a webinar on the Legacy FamilyTrees website which has given by Devin Ashby at www.familytreewebinars.com/presenter_details.php?presenter_id=39. Although one has to pay to view these webinars, this one will always be FREE because it is sponsored by FamilySearch. (I watched it Wednesday and it is very good.)

Monday’s with Myrt Webinar

Yesterday, I listed to Dear Myrtle's (Pat Richley-Erickson) first webinar in her new series, “Mondays with Myrt”. What a delightful way to spend an hour or so listening to her and her cousin, Russ Worthington, who kept everything in running order.

She had, as special guest, Denise Levenick, The Family Curator blogger www.thefamilycurator.com, and author of a new book, How to Archive Family Keepsakes.

Pat and Denise talked about different aspects of archiving family heirlooms and how to go about doing that, and gave some advice on setting-up one's own archives.

Dear Myrt then had a lightning round at the end of the program in which listeners phoned in and told her how they archived their own family keepsakes.

And one more important thing to mention is that Dear Myrt asked people to enter the 2012 Share a Memory contest, and pne of the winners was Diane Rogers, the person behind the British Columbia Genealogy Society blog at http://www.bcgs.ca, and her own personal blog called CanadaGenealogy, or 'Jane's Your Aunt', at http://canadagenealogy.blogspot.com.

In her blog post of September 26, 2012 entitled, “My Childhood Room - Pink, Pink - My Share A Memory”, she talks about her childhood memory of her room in the house (she even has a floor plan of her bedroom, which she drew), and everything in the room was in her favourite coluor - PINK!

What is a ‘Reasonably Exhaustive Search? A Webinar

Michael Hait, a very renowned, and respected genealogists from Delaware, gave a Webinar Wednesday (sponsored by Legacy Family Tree) in which he gave a lecture on doing an exhaustive evidence search in using the Genealogical Proof Standard to do genealogy.

Michael discussed what a “reasonably exhaustive search” is, why it is necessary, and how to conduct a search.

He gave a case study of his own family who lived in Stanford, Connecticut, and New York. This is where he used the Genealogical Proof Standard – was his ancestor born in Connecticut or New York.

See how he used “direct evidence” and “indirect evidence” to solve the problem.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars

On Wednesday afternoon, I had the pleasure of listening to a Webinar given by Judy G. Russell CG called “Building a Family from Circumstantial Evidence” put on by Legacy Family Tree.

The Webinar (which lasted almost 2 wonderful hours!) concentrated on using indirect evidence to construct a family tree.

She used a case study to show how finding all records and citing the sources of evidence, analyzing all the data, and resolving conflicts as they arise was the way to solve the particular problem she had – how to construct a family tree with a group of dates from a family Bible.

Obviously, Webinars are becoming more popular now with 1,700 people worldwide checking in to view this Webinar. And these Webinars are FREE! (for a certain amount of time after after their initial date of viewing).

It looks like I will be reserving Wednesday afternoons now so that I can take in future Webinars.

Next Wednesday, they will have Lisa Alzo (familiar to OGS people because she has talked here at different conferences), and she will talk on September 5th. The topic will be “Beyond the Arrival Date: Extracting More from Passenger Lists”.

 Although it's has taken awhile, there are now some Canadian Webinars which are coming to the Internet.  

 I came across Lisa Alzo's Webinar Canadian Genealogy for Americans to be given Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central, 6 p.m. Mountain, 5 p.m. Pacific).
